Twitters to follow

Twitter is a new social media outlet to me. I am now a twitter user. Once I created my my account I began to follow certain sustainable pages such as Green Source, which tweets about Sustainable Design, Green Building, LEED Certified Projects. Also, LivingHomes, which talks about modern, sustainably design. Green by Design examines sustainable fashion by asking one question: Is it Green by Design? I love Planet Green. This user offers practical, everyday tips on how to live a greener lifestyle. They offer actionable advice across a variety of topics: green made real. I also chose to follow Education America because I am an educator and always reaching out for tips or advice! Sustainability is something I enjoy at home, work and sharing with my friends and family, so the sites I chose to follow, will provide valuable information for my interests!

LinkedIn Personal Perspective

I am an active user with LinkedIn.  I am a group member of Sustainability Professionals, The Business of Fitness and Wines & Spirits. I enjoy reading the updates for the group but rarely participate. I have used LinkedIn to stay connected with coworkers, search for employment, seek professional advice and market myself. I was uncertain before I signed up, which was over a year ago, but I defiantly see the benefits of this social media website. I have suggested the site to friends and assisted them when setting up their profile. The benefits include a wide range of job opportunities and were to professionally network. LinkedIn also allows users to keep in touch with friends, coworkers or former colleagues. Linked In also allows you to an advanced search for people, places, jobs, companies, groups and more. You can narrow your search to something specific if you choose. One downside I see with LinkedIn is the upgrade option. There are certain restrictions users’ encounters, unless they want to pay a fee to upgrade. There have been times I wish I could send a message to another member, but was stopped due to the level of my membership. Another con for the site is the abundance of candidates and skill level. You may appear in a search by a recruiter or company, but you may be in the search with hundreds just like you, which may limit the connections you receive from recruiters.

GreenWiki -Wikia

The site provides sustainable catagories easy to navigate and edit if one feels the need. The site seems to be successful with the activity and posts that are added to it. I feel the point is clear and provides individuals with exaples of sustainablilty and all that it can encompass.

Online/Offline Media

Sea World create campaign whose mission was to build relationships with coaster communities, build awareness of the attractions and increase traffic to the park. Their marketing consisted of online and offline strategies. Offline consisted of TV commercials, work of mouth and advertisement on beverage products.
Their results showed TV commercial produced right under 40% of visitors. Though the percent of commercial advertisement and online marketing were fairly close, the price was to produce the two was quite different. “Overall, the cost per impression for the social media campaign was $0.22 versus
$1.00 for television.” Connecting with coaster bloggers was one of Sea Worlds first attempt to promote online. The attempt proved to be successful, with the positive comments the bloggers would post about Sea World. I feel the companies social media was successful. The videos and photos were a great addition. I believe adding the photos and videos increased the target audience, allowing young views to connect to the coasters also. Blogging attracts diverse audiences, so connecting with bloggers and blog site, proved successful for their social media.

Sea World San Antonio’s choince to identify social media to specific target audiance was a smart decision. Each attempt with their online and offline marketing plan, showed success for the advertisment of Alantis San Antonio.

Boomers VS Gen Y

When interviewing my uncle (young boomer), I noticed there are many reasons that he and I share when using social media and there a few differences. First, he is not continually on social media. I am! I am checking Facebook, searching pinterest ideas or emailing! He will use email about one a day and log on to his Facebook when someone tells him about a recent pic of the family. I had to explain pinterest to him! I tend to use social media for invitations, checking in at venues and meeting up with friends. I showed my uncle how to create and accept an invitation online! He knew about checking into your location, but will not take advantage of the option. However, we both joined Facebook to stay connected with friends and family…I am just logged on more frequently 🙂 He is usually up to date with family information, but he finds info out after most of the family, since we frequent Facebook. He enjoys social media and the opportunities that it provides, he just limits are activity. He was unaware of LinkedIn, so he and I created a profile so he could network for his job.

My uncle uses social media to search and watch videos. This is a similarity we share, but I do not usually watch videos in search for entertainment, along with online games, he does.  I will watch videos for research and sometimes for entertainment. We both shop online! He for hunting equipment, me, for clothes! We both bank and pay bills online, which he said has made his life easier! : )

I think the challenges are the lack of education.  I feel that education for all generations is crucial to successful communication with social media. Education is important, to the individual who WANT to learn. However, the oldest users are less likely to use the tools on a regular basis or learn what social media is at all. This will challenge us to rethink how we use the web and how to engage older people with newer technologies.

“If it’s good technology, seniors embrace it the same as everyone else,” he said. “The key here is if it is truly ‘good’ and they see a real use for it, whether for entertainment or business or lifestyle. They are smart shoppers who aren’t so much interested in [the] useless ‘bells and whistles’ many products contain.” Elie Gindi

I feel younger generations have the advantage when using social media because they are exposed to it at an early age than young boomers. Providing videos or making software or SM programs more intuitive. Instead of becoming frustrated, thy could continue with their task.

Benefits of social media!!

Pros of social media will outweigh the cons!

A social networking site can be a good way to make connections with people with similar interests and goals. They can be a way to connect with or “meet” people that a student may not have had the opportunity to before—including other students, staff, faculty and even alumni.

Thanks to social networking sites, meeting someone in person has become a thing of the past. “Poking” has become the new handshake. Making friends and renewing old ones is easy. Thus, meeting people and staying connected with classmates and friends is a major benefit of social networking sites.

There is a solution! With Social Media Marketing, you can effectively engage with prospects & customers by:

answering their questions

showing your appreciation for their support

responding to their concerns, comments & customer service needs

asking for their input & opinions

encouraging them to comment on your blog, Facebook page, etc…

responding to reviews left on Yelp & other peer recommendation sites

posting a poll & commenting on the results

promoting & running contests or give-a-ways

Social media is today’s marketing!

Is social media a fad?? I don’t think so!

The Campaign:

Gap teamed up with popular group-buying site Groupon to offer a nation-wide deal: $50 worth of apparel for just $25. By the end of the day, 441,000 groupons were sold bringing in a little more than $11 million.

What Worked:

The sale marked Groupon’s first nation-wide deal with a major brand. For Gap, the deal brought in a ton of cash and, hopefully, new customers. “We’re really trying to reach new customers,” said Chris Gayton, Gap’s Senior Director of Media. “To reach them in ways that are part of their everyday so that it becomes like a conversation.”

Gap’s other social media efforts, including deals for Foursquare users, are about building a community. Gayton said that 70% of people that buy something in a Gap store started browsing on their website. Social media is a way to reach those people and bring them under their brand. Part of that is encapsulated in their 1969 denim stream. Billed as a catch-all resource on denim (not just Gap-sponsored ads, though they are there as well), Gap built it to offer added value and create conversation. Online loyalty will hopefully turn into profit.

Providing social media campaign in addition to a companies marketing plan can add value to the brand. Groupon or other social media outlets provide opportunity to users who have day to day business online

Million Dollar homes…$250 HVAC!!!

The last of my visits was with Bobby Harrell of Harrell custom homes. I decided to speak with him, because I am familiar with his beautiful, elegant, Million dollar plus homes. I had the opportunity to visit another builder, Ferrier, so I wanted to see the difference in efficiency and consumer acceptance.

The first home I visited was a million dollar home, 5,000 square feet. . I was surprised to see the complete package of foam encapsulated insulation. I have heard all about it, but to actually see the material in the walls and the attic, was pretty neat. The temperature in the attic was a pleasant 72 degrees and will remain the same year around.

The homes utilize thin wood floors, MDF(medium density fiberglass),the facets are low flow and the toilets 1.6 gallon toilet flushes. Says the toilet to flush 24 golf balls! I was impressed to learn the builders use PEX piping. Which is a durable plastic, instead of copper.

“PEX (or crosslinked polyethylene) is part of a water supply piping system that has several advantages over metal pipe (copper, iron, lead) or rigid plastic pipe (PVC, CPVC, ABS) systems. It is flexible, resistant to scale and chlorine, doesn’t corrode or develop pinholes, is faster to install than metal or rigid plastic, and has fewer connections and fittings”

All the appliances are energy star and the HVAC system is a multi-stage system with a compressor outside and blower inside. He guarantees the homeowners AC and heating will not exceed $250!!! That is crazy to think in a 5,000-7,500 square foot home!!

An example of foaming the walls of a home…

The homes also are designed with low-E, argon-filled windows, saving about $600 per house. “Window choice has a real impact on heating and cooling costs”

I can only hope to own a million dollar home, but it is impressive to know that a builder with generous client, still promotes energy efficiency. I was glad I had the opportunity to see the process of foam insulation. Who knows…maybe one day I will be selling the homes and have the upperhand on the sustainable aspects!
